PROJECT 5: HORACE'S REVENGE - MOB FARM MARK TWO

Project coordinates: X -15 : Y +190 : Z +102
Date completed: 3 November 2014
Minecraft day completed: 1161

So far at this point I've got somewhere to live, a source of endless iron and gold, a means of trading away useless items, and a rudimentary provider of mob drops - but the last of these really does need to be improved, desperately. Hence, one mob farm gave way to another...

The main failing of DiehlGames' mob farm, I found, was that I could never be sure that the mobs that spawned inside it were walking off the edges they're supposed to, or whether they stood still because I was standing too far away. There's one way to solve that - an active mob farm, one which lets the mobs build up in the dark, and then sweeps them away to an instant and splattery death. And the one I found that worked spectacularly? TheSmokingKoala's "The X". The debate raged about whether the spawning platforms needed to be packed ice or not (and they don't - xisumavoid's Minecraft Mythbusting series has covered it more than once) but what really swung it was the timing mechanism. The way it switches the dispensers on, then there's a short pause, they switch off, and there's a much longer pause - I'd been looking for something like that for quite some time and given that there's a full tutorial in the video, I need never forget how to make that timer.

This farm has been updated: see Project 31: Fixing More Holes.

Typical production rate per hour: 958 bones, 937 arrows, 929 zombie flesh, 873 gunpowder,
597 string, 107 assorted witch drops - total 4,401

One final point to make: Horace's Revenge is not accessible from the ground, the only entrance is via the Nether Hub.
