RICK DANGEROUS
THE SOUNDS FILE

Right, people, listen up. Really, I mean, listen up - this is the sounds file. Every sample I could possibly find on the Atari ST version of Rick and Rick 2 has been recorded, packaged and posted here for all to see (I mean, hear...) along with others, added as I find them.

The samples are up here for everyone to use to make, say, a desktop theme; I can think of a fair few uses for some of them - e.g. the Rick 2 theme tune to start Windows, and a WAAAAA to exit with!

Note that the ST and Amiga samples are MP3 files - due to the obvious bandwidth problem for the use of WAV files. So here's a suggestion. Use Winamp's disk writer facility to convert MP3 to WAV. All you have to do is change the output device to "Nullsoft Disk Writer" in the Preferences menu - don't forget to change it back again.

Failing that, some MP3 encoders such as my personal preference, CDex include decoders as well.

Incidentally, many of the sounds here have been used, some in modified form, for Gelatine's Rick Dangerous III, which is still in development. For instance, the "waaaaaaa" has had the speed altered to create higher and lower voices. However, the first test package he sent me used a WAV version of the Rick 1 theme tune, making the file unfeasibly large.

Hence, I composed MIDI versions of the theme tunes using Noteworthy Composer, a rather fantastic MIDI composer for those who can read and write music. "ST" or "Amiga" derived MIDI files have different instruments and/or arrangements, chosen to simulate that version of the theme tune as closely as possible. There are now also MIDI versions of some of the cut-scene tunes as well; they will all be posted up eventually.

I am also looking to add as many AY and SID sound rips as possible, from the Spectrum and Commodore 64. So far there are two AY files, which require an AY emulator or a Winamp plug-in. So far the recommended AY player is Sergey Bulba's player, though this needs to be unpacked with 7zip, provided below. There is also NEZplug, a Winamp plug-in. It seems the C64 rips can come in a variety of formats: the raw SID files contain all the tunes in one package which can be accessed individually with a SID player, or can be extracted to IT, SID-to-MIDI and S3M files which can be played in Winamp but are less reliable. There's a SID player here, and the Windoze version is here.

Cheers to Titanwing for the SID files, Mike Gorchak for the IT, S3M and Commodore MIDI files, and Ola Stelzer for the Amiga Rick 1 sound effects.
