Over the spring and summer of 2003 I was asked by several people if I could provide sprites and tiles from Rick 1 and 2, for anyone wanting to program a remake. It doesn't necessarily have to be this way; the Spoutnick Team's aborted remake of Rick 1 for the Game Boy Advance, and the excellent Dangerous Xmas both used completely new graphics.
However, ripping graphics directly from the existing games does make things a lot easier. Fortunately, Stephen from bigorno.net, the creator of XRick, provided the full set of sprites from Rick 1 over on the Rick Dangerous section of Vomitorium Obscenum.
I have also been asked to provide animations of the sprites (e.g. Rick walking, Rick crawling, etc.) This, however, is greatly hindered by the GIF-free nature of this site; and animations I provided would either be in zipped FLC form, which is not so useful for people without Jasc Animation Shop or a Quicktime plug-in for M$IE5, or MNG form, which takes up far more space than a GIF, even when zipped.
It is possible, though, to compile your own animations from individual sprites, if you know what you're doing, and this page may one day provide information on how to create your own animations from what you see below.
There are seven images below, which contain all the sprites needed to remake the whole of Rick 1. These were created by Stephen from bigorno.net, by reverse engineering the game, thus ensuring that all the sprites are intact.
A ZIP file containing them all can be found here.
The PNG files below are set to "no transparency", so that what you see below is what the sprite really looks like. When ripping the sprites from these images, make sure the background is changed to a colour which will not be used in the game (e.g. magenta, #FF00FF), replace the black background with this and set it to be the transparent colour, and it should work - though I'm not a game programmer, so I can't try it myself.

Listed below is my attempts at ripping the tiles directly from the level maps. Hence, what you see in the ZIP files will be the graphics from the ST and Amiga versions of Rick 1.
To the best of my knowledge, everything I can see that would be needed to completely recreate the entire game. Much as I have tried to include every last tile that I can see, I make no guarantees that they're all here. If anyone finds a tile I haven't included, then send it to me...
Universal tiles for all levels (14.8 KB)
South America (13.7 KB)
Egypt (21.6 KB)
Schwarzendumpf Castle (not yet available)
Missile Base (not yet available)
Someone else who has been busy on this is Kilian Hekhuis who first showed me how to use the hex codes for the PC version of Rick 1 and 2.
The tiles below have been produced by reverse engineering, so this should, by all rights, be the complete set. Feel free to use my individually-packaged sprites if you like, but this should be the definitive set.

Kilian Hekhuis did not stop at ripping the tiles for Rick 1. I declined to try this, thinking it would be a mammoth task. It is... unless you're a reverse engineer, in which case it's a far shorter job. And so, here is a complete set of Rick 2 tiles.
Each set is divided into two sections - those at the top are the four individual frames of a cycling tile, e.g. for the moving water in the Ice Caverns Of Freezia.

This is the latest batch of Kilian Hekhuis' great work, which has now culminated in a full set of tiles and sprites for Rick 1 and 2.
These are PNG files, with the background value #F7F7F7 set as the transparency - full white #FFFFFF is used in the sprites. All sprites are 32×22 pixels.
A ZIP file containing them all can be found here.

Another contribution to the graphics archive comes from Frenkel Smeijers, who has ripped the sprites and tiles from the PC EGA version of Rick 1 into a couple of master files, as shown below. These will need a modicum of cut & paste to be useful, but it shouldn't be too big a job...

I'm sure I can see some CGA graphics in there as well, such as the walls from Egypt...
