Dave Hughes decided not to make a WOOT! Tape Magazine for 2024, but suggested we should have a "festive programs and banter" thread instead. My idea was to make a musical extravaganza in collaboration with Lee Bee - welding his expertise with making AY music to my faltering efforts with Beepola. Annoyingly, Real Life intervened in November, and I ran right out of time to make the intended program - so I packaged one of Lee's seasonally-appropriate AY tunes, with two of my efforts with QChan on Beepola, and we didn't let the forum down after all. ROGER THE PANGOLIN IN 2020 KNURLED TOUR by Jason Railton Models: Spectrum 48K, 128K, +2, +2A, +3 Formats:    .TAP Released: December 2020 Part of WOOT! Tape Magazine - ZXMas 2020 Edition. You wouldn't notice it immediately if I didn't tell you, but this is another one of Jason Railton's colour-clash-busting games; the smooth movement of the advancing Rainbow Road requires that technique. Jason wanted some level designs for this game, and though I don't consider myself much of a level designer, I thought I'd have a go... imagine my shock when all my levels made it into the game. "Crevasses" has some enormous gaps and some blind decisions, "Subliminal" hints at what I was about to be hosting in 2021, "Dominetris" is a tribute to one of my favourite modern games, and "Waves" is downright sadistic and requires hyperhuman reactions. So said Dave in the intro to WOOT! that year. And to think I'd been looking forward to repairing my life in the new decade... so much for that. At least I was given the chance to contribute to the end-of-year magazine - providing the soundtrack for (or rather, a list of HL and DE values for...) "The Union of Alliterative Spectrum Heroes Xmas Party". This is the bassline from Deee-Lite's Groove Is In The Heart, which they swiped from Herbie Hancock, and which I probably hadn't heard since its release in 1990. According to Dave, the mere presence of that bassline means "there's a party happening here". I wouldn't know. WOOT! TAPE MAGAZINE ISSUE #5 - ZXMAS 2021 EDITION by Dave Hughes Models: Spectrum 128K, +2, +2A, +3 Formats:    .TAP Released: December 2021 2021's edition of WOOT! was the biggest and the best to date (wasn't it?) - and my job was to disturb the marvellous 128K AY soundtrack with nine Machine Code BEEP Sequenced notes from Mariah Carey's immensely irritating All I Want For Christmas Is You, which I will not dignify with a link - and fortunately, I didn't have to listen to it because I knew exactly which bit Dave wanted to accompany some dreadful Spectrum-related puns on the song title. WOOT! THE COVID CHRONICLE by Dave Hughes Models: Spectrum 128K, +2, +2A, +3 Formats:    .TAP Released: December 2020 Part of WOOT! Tape Magazine - ZXMas 2020 Edition. WOOT! The COVID Chronicle told a satirical version of the story of the most ludicrous year in all our lives. Accompanied by some suitably 2020-ified sprites from Spectrum games from The Before Times, my contribution will be heard as soon as it loads - a Machine Code BEEP Sequencer rendition of the bass line from Joy Division's Isolation (as expertly covered by Therapy?). It was the perfect introductory tune for a year dominated by being held under house arrest for unnaturally long periods. Later on, you'll hear the theme tune from The Archers - that was mine as well, breaking through Beyker Soft's excellent AY soundtrack. XENON 2 INTERVIEW by Dave Hughes, featuring David Spicer Models: Spectrum 128K, +2, +2A, +3 Formats:    .TAP Released: December 2021 Part of WOOT! Tape Magazine - ZXMas 2021 Edition. Dave Hughes' interview with David Spicer, would-be creator of Xenon 2 had it ever been released for the Spectrum, needed a beeper-friendly rendition of the game's theme tune, Megablast by Bomb The Bass (although the soundtrack for the Amiga version of Xenon 2 was the intended target). He asked me to do it, even though all I had at my disposal was the Machine Code BEEP Sequencer. That was enough - Dave only had to edit the way it looped. My contribution should be accessible in 48K mode, but the Xenon 2 demo will need to be loaded in 128K. ZX CODEWORDS by Dave Hughes Models: Spectrum 48K, 128K, +2, +2A, +3 Formats:    .TAP Released: December 2021 Part of WOOT! Tape Magazine - ZXMas 2021 Edition. This is a Spectrumised version of those Codeword puzzles you find in newspapers and puzzle magazines - each of the holes is numbered, each number corresponds to a letter and you have to work out which letters go where. These were all Spectrum-themed (obviously) and I contributed three of the sixteen Codewords, two on modern games (circa 2003 onwards), and one on items from Dizzy games. As well as Dave's own Codewords, others were provided by Robert Morrison, Andy Jenkinson and "Greencard".
