Stranger in a strange land, land of ice and snow,
Trapped here in this prison, lost and far from home...
And so begins the story of how this stranger attempts to survive, make a new home and generally get established in a permafrost-covered strange land without being trapped inside any prison.
If there's anything that starting this new restricted world taught me, it's that everything I've built up in Sinclair's Foundry over the last two-and-a-bit years has made me very complacent. Furthermore, that world was started in 1.8; 1.9 brought the combat changes and 1.10 brought the strays into Ice Plains biomes, both of which I'd be dealing with here for the first time without all the weapons and armour I'd become so used to.
This first year in the Arctic landscape has already cost me 15 deaths - a couple of which were falling from a great height without extra protection, but a fair few more were me not realising that hostile mobs from 1.9 onwards can rip through iron armour like it's little more than tinfoil - and due to the difficulty in obtaining a fully powered enchantment table, none of it even had Protection I, let alone IV. There's also the not insignificant problem that grilled herring isn't very good food - the saturation level is particularly poor, meaning it takes two or three of them to heal me fully if I take a pounding. Still, it would very soon become my most abundant food source, so I won't complain too much.
I did spend a fair time hiding from the dangers outside, most of which was leaving the world AFK overnight on the fish farm - so it may not look like I've achieved much in this first year, but an overnight AFK session will add 20-30 days to the world and I've deliberately not gone overboard on building projects before I've established the essentials.
